WEBINAR POVERTY SERIES: Session 4

Identifying areas most in need - Welsh Index of Multiple Deprivation

Children in Wales is delighted to work alongside representatives from the Welsh Government to present the next webinar in our poverty-related series.

At this webinar you will learn about the latest Welsh Index of Multiple Deprivation (WIMD 2019), the official measure of the most deprived small areas in Wales, a powerful tool to identify areas most in need and to highlight inequalities.

This session will provide an introduction into what WIMD is, what it measures and how it can be used to draw insights into deprivation and inequalities in Wales.

Find out about its wealth of indicators covering topics from income to health and education, with a focus during this session on highlighting information that relates to poverty, children and young people.

You will be signposted to data, maps, tools and guidance which will support you in conducting your own analyses.

Speakers:

Nia Jones is Head of Social Justice Statistics in the Welsh Government Knowledge and Analytical Services. She has extensive experience of the Welsh Index of Multiple Deprivation (WIMD) and has been involved in three iterations of WIMD between 2011 and 2019.

Samantha Collins is a Higher Statistical Officer at Welsh Government. Sam works on Nia’s team and leads on poverty and deprivation-related statistics, including WIMD.

Quote from previous webinar:

"Thankyou, these webinars are so informative.  Such a good way to spend an hour!"

Examples of Positive Practice - Can you help?

Are you working to mitigate the impact of poverty for children, young people and families, through local practice, policy or projects? If so, we’d love to hear about it.

We are looking for examples from across Wales that we can share with a wide audience through our series of poverty-related webinars. All examples are welcome regardless of size or setting, from internal staff awareness and changing attitudes, to community or county-wide projects. All have an important role to play and our audiences are keen to learn from you.
